Pelagic Bar & Dining

Bestie L and I had been wanting to go for a nice dinner together for months. Awhile ago she snagged a great deal on one of the coupon websites and before we knew it we were booked in for a lovely dinner at Pelagic. We were quite surprised when we walked inside, it had changed so much from when it was Antigos- it now has a much nicer atmosphere and it was quite busy which is always nice (we think a few others had coupons as well!). It was a little dark for good picture taking (and there may or may not have been some pre-dinner drinks) so the pictures don't quite do the food justice.

As part of the deal we got two glasses of house wine. L and I opted for the white wine which turned out to be Italian and pretty good for a house white. Then we got down to picking our entrees. I opted for the Sashimi plate- and was very happy about it! It came on a lovely plate (with chopsticks) and had an assortment of salmon, tuna, scallops and what appeared to be kingfish; served with pickled ginger, soy and wasabi. The fish was lovely and fresh, well cut and flavourful. It was also a good size for an entree.

Sashimi!
L decided to try the salmon pastrami, which sounded quite strange but was actually delicious. Again there was fresh salmon, but this time coated with the right spices for a pastrami look. It was served with toasted sourdough, olive oil and lemon and tasted pretty divine!

Kinda looks like real pastrami doesn't it?
Then it was onto mains! L had the Hiramasa kingfish served with caramelised garlic and mushroom ragout.  Again the fish was fresh, cooked perfectly and nicely plated up. There was enough sauce and mushrooms to complement the fish and it was an all round good dish.

Kingfish
Although not normally a tuna person, I decided on the grilled yellowfin tuna served with warm spanish onion, cherry tomatoes and a balsamic glaze. It was a lovely piece of tuna, cooked well (you can see the slight pink still down the bottom) and extremely tasty. The balsamic vinegar had been cooked down to make a nice strong glaze which worked really well with the roasted tomatoes. Some basil leaves gave it a bit of freshness without overpowering the flavour of the tuna. I was very impressed!

Delish!
We also got dessert with our meal! We both picked the poached pear with pear jelly, pistachios and vanilla ice cream. Unfortunately I only managed to get one very blurry picture of the dessert which is not really website worthy. The dessert was pretty good though, the pear was slightly crunchy, sweetened a little bit by the syrup and L said the ice cream was pretty good. The only down point was that we could not taste the pear jelly- our plates had clearly just come out of the dishwasher and were quite hot, the jelly had melted to a tiny puddle by the time the plates arrived at the table.

Apart from the super minor problem with the jelly we had an excellent meal; the food was good as was the service and we left feeling a perfectly contended kind of full! Without a coupon it is a little expensive but I would definitely come again for a special occasion.
